CHRISSI island can be found off the south coast of Crete opposite to the town of IERAPETRA.As soon as we arrive by coach to IERAPETRA we will board the boat for our journey to the small paradise island. The boat journey takes around 1 hour and on the way if we are lucky we may see a wild dolphin or two.

The guide will inform us of the departure time for the return boat and we can spend 5 glorious hours on the lovely island.On the white sands we can find pretty shells of all colours and the setting is magnificent against the blue crystal clear sea.

The sea around the island are filled with fossils on volcanic rocks, which are there since the island of Chrissi was still immersed in the sea. The total of some 49 species of fossils have been found there, dating from 350,000 to 70,000 years ago .

East of Golden, at 700 meters there is another island called Mikronisi , where one can admire the hundreds of seagulls that have found refuge there.

The Golden because of the natural ecosystem and the incredible beauty, is part of the European landscape protection program Scenic NATURA 2000.

About the beach Gaidouronisi (Golden) 

Golden is one of the 81 uninhabited islands of Crete and is about 8 nautical miles south of Ierapetra. Locals call it "Gaidouronisi" or just "Island". The length of the island is 5 km and a width of 1 km. Highest point called Kefalas and at a height of 31 meters. It is an earthly paradise of golden beaches and white sand, crystal blue waters, ancient cedars and countless small shells in several places on the coast! Throughout the length of the island, mainly in the center, there is the cedar forest with trees that exist there for over 200 years! West of the island there is the church of St. Nicholas was built probably in the 13th century, the salt lake that still has salt, the rock-cut tombs of the Roman period, the lighthouse and the arm of the ancient port. The sea around the Golden is very rich with fossils on volcanic rocks, which are there since the island was submerged in the sea! Many of these fossils are still in the area around the Golden. On the northern coast of the island, namely the beaches Belegrina, Hatzivolakas and face to face, there is a vast number of small shells which in principle give you the impression of small pebbles. But when you put in your palm and look closely, you will see surprisingly only small shells! The majority of these coasts swarmed by small shells! Those beaches are sunbeds and umbrellas for hire and a beach bar with snacks and refreshments. East of Golden, about 700 meters, is a small rocky island Mikronisi. There sheltering hundreds of seagulls! On the southeastern side of the Golden, there is the harbor where the boats dock carrying visitors to the island, a tavern for food and coffee, and a beautiful beach with loungers and umbrellas for rent. The Golden because of infinite beauty and its ecosystem have joined the European network of protected landscapes Scenic NATURA 2000. To go there one can board one of the boats that make the connection. The boats leave from Ierapetra at 10:30 and at 12:30 in the morning at 17:00 and return at 18:00 pm and the journey takes about an hour. The route starts in May and ends in October. All guests are required to respect and watch this paradise called Golden. Spaces pollution, changing labels of trails, camping and collecting shells.
