The Gallery opened in 1992 and the Center for Contemporary Art creating the 1995 contract signed between Rethymno Municipality and the Ministry of Culture.In all these years,the central area and other areas used by the institution for contemporary art managed to overcome the most optimistic expectations by raising the Panhellenic and sometimes the international community of art. Reports international content, programs and partnerships with relevant institutions in Greece and abroad,while representatives of institutions, academic and artists from Europe and the USA Ασυναντήθηκαν the museum’s exhibits with artists and the university community. In particular, since 1992, have organized 88 exhibitions, monographic and thematic and issued 60 lists.
The new site has been developed with the permanent exhibition of works byn Lefteris Kanakis and part of the permanent collection on the top floor. The downstairs luggage is designed to accommodate periodic reports, projections, lectures, small musical events and the kind of cultural leisure which combines the cafe with the library and the shop.
With the new museum space and the consequent optimism the museum looks forward to a strong and sustained activity that goes beyond the requirements of a difficult economic situation and the utter indifference of the Ministry of Culture which took in the past to ensure a good museum building, abandoning then any interest. However, the city has shown that it has consistently supporting the continued operation of the site. By a decision of the Municipal Council the museum will be funded with 250,000 euros annually to ensure its operational costs and the possibility of exhibition display, a production.
The new Museum opens only works with the permanent collection organized in a report titled “The threshold two centuries”. This is an indicator for the Greek visual untouched, from 1960 until today. The main body of the report has as theme focuses on the human form, the narrative (and the concepts. Special reference is made to the political art of yesterday and today, as well as to the environment in the section man and nature. Even the geometric projects which are part of the report linking their existence with the visible or imaginary “shell” which houses the man.
The National Gallery has in its collections more than 17.000 works of painting, sculpture, engravings and other forms of art, and is the treasury of the recent Greek artistic creativity, covering a timespan from the metabyzantine days up to our days.
