The Museum Nikos Kazantzakis in Myrtia Heraklion opened on June 27, 1983 by the culture minister Melina Mercouri.

The main lines of action of the museum are (a) the collection exhibits that relate directly to the life of the author (b) reception, information and guided tour of visitors, (c) the organization of events, (d) publications studies and books and (e) the implementation of programs, projects and other cooperation.

The building of the report set out objects which are directly related to the work of Nikos Kazantzakis. Overall exposed 1,102 objects (pictures, manuscripts, works of art, artifacts etc. ) and shall be kept in the warehouse, in the new building, some 60,000 forms archival copy nature.

The Nikos Kazantzakis Museum here and 2 years is implementing the project “digitalization, promotion and exploitation of cultural Documentation and collections of Museum Nikos Kazantzakis”, under the OPS “Information Society” (Measure 1.3, Call 65). Purpose of the work, such as structured in the five work, are:

• The supply and installation of electronic equipment and networking,

• The digitization of collections and the dissemination of results,

• The scientific documentation of collections,

• The development website (portal) and software support,

• To create educational-entertainment electronic version (DVD-Rom) titled “The Life and work of the Nikos Kazantzakis”.

 With the courtesy of the Foundation “Stavros Νiarxos” the museum has completed the construction of the building administration, with multi-purpose halls, with a view to attracting students and researchers, who will be working at postgraduate or doctoral level on the work of Kazantzakis, making use of the Library, the file type and the archival copy material (manuscripts, texts, photos, letters etc. ) and to produce various events that will satisfy and will promote the purposes of the Foundation.
